Is Composting the Only Option for FOGO? Webinar
23 November 2021 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm UTC+10

Recovery of diversion of co-collected food and garden organics (FOGO) is gaining significant momentum across the country. The organics recycling sector and composting industry has grown to meet the challenge – with organics recycling increasing from 5.15 million tonnes in 2006/07 to 6.99 million tonnes in 2018/19. Yet up to 50% by weight over the average red bin disposed to landfill is still food and garden organics.
To help drive improvements in recycling rates for municipal and commercial / industrial wastes, recovery of FOGO is considered critical. In NSW, the NSW Government has mandated compulsory FOGO collections by councils by 2030. Other states and territories too are rapidly implementing FOGO collection and recycling programs.
Whilst windrow composting and in-vessel composting are well demonstrated, new technologies are being deployed world-wide to derive more economic value from the nutrients and organic matter recovered from FOGO. In this seminar we highlight some of the new technologies to help broaden the range of infrastructure opportunities to councils and industry to assist in the sustainable diversion of organics from landfill.
