Victoria’s waste is growing as our population increases. Of the waste generated across the state around two thirds is recovered for recycling and reuse and the rest goes into landfill.
To help increase resource recovery and keep more waste out of landfill, new and innovative approaches need to be explored and tested. Turning waste into energy is an opportunity to extract value from waste that would otherwise go to landfill.
Generating energy from waste can add reliable renewable energy to our energy mix and by reducing our reliance on landfill, it can also reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. But we need to make sure that we continue to reduce, recycle and reuse before we recover energy from our waste.
